Let’s Talk Sunscreen and Sun Protection

I know it’s been a cold and rainy spring here in Utah, but have you stocked up on sunscreen for the summer yet? If you are wondering what sunscreen to buy, here are some pro tips:

Sun protection is your best defense against the harsh rays of the sun. First, check the expiration date on the sunscreen you may have left over from last year, if it’s expired, throw it out. If your bottle has been left in a hot boat, car or garage, the ingredients have most likely gone bad, throw it out. Lastly, if the active ingredient is one, any or all of the following: oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, homosalate or avobenzone, throw it out! These ingredients are known as chemical sunscreens, which protect you from getting skin cancer, but at what cost?
Chemical sunscreens are easy to apply, but cause heat in the skin, which can activate melanocytes resulting in melasma and uneven pigment. Hawaii and Key West have banned the sale of sunscreen containing the coral-harming chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, in an effort to save the coral reefs and marine life. The average American blood draw has traces of chemical sunscreens, and they are even being found in breast milk. There are studies suggesting that this exposure to these chemicals in the human body may effect the endocrine system and healthy hormone function.
So what should your suncreen contain? Minerals! Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are natural minerals from the earth that block 100% UVA & UVB rays, while keeping your skin COOL and protected. If you are going to be playing in the water all day, wear a rash guard to cover your skin and apply mineral sunscreen where needed.
